The most underrated place we stopped in Scotland was easily Glencoe! On our way from Glenfinnan to Stirling, I knew we would drive through Glencoe. That was about the extent of planning I’d done! I knew there was a terrible massacre there, but I wasn’t very informed on what we were driving into.
Glencoe, Scotland
This place is amazing! It’s gorgeous and magical and majestic and everything you want Scotland to be. We could not stop pulling over to take it all in and take pictures! Dave got some amazing drone footage and I can’t wait to edit those! It seemed like every corner we took we would have our breath taken away!
We stopped at the Glencoe Visitor’s center for a minute and learned a little bit about the settlement. It’s so pretty I wish these pictures captured how gorgeous it is! After a little bit of driving I was feeling nice and sick and tired (thank you 6 weeks pregnancy), and Dave still wanted to pull over to get some drone footage. I watched it and was so mad that I didn’t suck it up and get out of the car that last time!
The little white house
Can you even handle how cute these little white houses are in Scotland? Because I cannot handle it, I’m obsessed with every single one that we saw. Charming bright white house, at the base of a dominating mountainscape.
The Three Sisters
These mountains and valleys make the stop in Glencoe more than worth it! One thing that I love doing, is realizing that I’m somewhere amazing, and I didn’t plan to get there. The “Three Sisters” also known as “Bidean Nam Bian” stop you in your tracks. It wasn’t until later that I looked up where we actually were, we got there by accident! Total serendipity. PS, this is where the opening shot of Outlander is filmed. It’s gorgeous.
Taking it all in
Like I mentioned above, we could not stop pulling over to take pictures. I think in a ten-minute time span, we pulled over three separate times. We pulled over to enjoy the view and get pictures and video and stayed out of the car for a while! When we finally got back in the car we thought we’d just keep driving but both of us kept looking at each other like, “Did you see that?!”
Glencoe Visitors Center
We decided to make a quick stop at the visitor’s center. It had some pretty views, but it wasn’t worth the entrance fee they would have charged to get into the museum. We were just as happy taking in the sights. I had read a bit about the Glencoe Massacre, so we had heard a bit of the history beforehand.
Glad you enjoyed Rannoch Moor and Glencoe, but I can assure you the area is rated and loved by both native Scots and visitors alike. The “little white house” in your first pic is at the foot of Buachaille Etive Mor and is owned by the National Trust for Scotland and is maintained by the Scottish Mountaineering Club and is available for booking.
Thank you! I’ll link that house, I’ll have that on my list of where I need to stay next time we make it to Scotland!
What incredible photography, thank you. We passed through Glencoe in 2008 taking a few photos. Oh to have a drone. The valleys are stunning.
We bought our drone right before we went on our trip to Scotland! It was incredible to have! And thank you!
